Pennsylvania Folk Gathering is full of great workshops, concerts, singing, and dancing. 

Friday, September 13, 2024

Friday 3:00 – 5:00 pm Pre-Event Intensive Classes

(separate registration required)
A pre-event intensive is a great way to get a jump-start on the weekend. held just before the rest of the festival gets going.

Class size is limited, and a separate registration fee is required.

 

2024 Intensive Classes

Basics for Beginners – Gene & Gayla Mills

In this special workshop designed for beginners and advanced beginners of all instruments, we’ll address basic folk music skills that will help you get the most out of the weekend. We’ll discuss how to play melody, learn by ear, play backup, maintain rhythm, sing, jam, and play well with other musicians.

 

Rhythm Guitar – Henry Koretzky

Learn to be a better rhythm section for your band or for your own voice. Using a variety of folk genres, we’ll cover moveable chord shapes, bass runs, strumming patterns, dynamics, and more.  For guitar players who are used to using a pick and who know at least 8-10 chords.

 

Fiddle Techniques (Violas welcome) – Simple Gifts

This class is a safe space to air your fiddle grievances, problematic tunes, and general questions about all things fiddle. Feel free to come with something in mind, or stick around to learn something unexpected. For all levels beyond beginner.

 

Mandolin Techniques – Steve Buckalew

A survey of all things mandolin, including playing techniques like tremolo and chording, problem-solving, and generally easing the path to mastering the mandolin. For all levels beyond beginner.

 

Clawhammer Banjo – Jay Best

We will explore several different tunings, double thumbing and drop thumbing techniques, hammer-on and pull-offs, and learn a tune or two using these techniques. For all levels beyond beginner.

 

Autoharp – Larry Mutti

We’ll explore options for both strumming and chording hand technique, as well as choosing and adapting tunes to suit your autoharp and your voice. Participants should come with a good familiarity with the chord bar layout on their own ‘harp, and with a favorite tune in mind that we might play together. For all levels beyond beginner.

 

Dobro – Ken Shafranko

Tips and techniques for becoming a better dobro player. For all levels beyond beginner.

 

Bluegrass Bass (Cellos welcome) – Bill Stetz

We’ll look at bass runs and techniques common in bluegrass music, as well as discussing the important role of the bass as the backbone of the band. The workshop will focus on bass (both acoustic and electric). Laura Alexander, one of the festival’s jam leaders this year, will be there to help interpret bass instruction for cellists.

 

Pennsylvania Folk Gathering Begins

Friday 4:00 – 5:15 pm

Jamming – Howard Blumenthal

This will be a fun, relaxed jam for all levels, also a good way to meet other attendees before things get going. All jams this weekend are inclusive, with all welcome and encouraged. Both songs and instrumental tunes will be played, and we’ll try to discourage playing difficult tunes that are hard for others to play or sing along.  The goal is to be inclusive, have fun, relax, and enjoy making music with others.

7:00 pm Staff Concert

You’ll meet and hear all of the instructors. After the concert, you’ll have an opportunity to sign up for a mini-lesson.

Beginners’ Jam – Jay Best

People who’ve never jammed are highly encouraged to come. For all voices and instruments, using easy songs and tunes. The jam will be interspersed with discussion about how to jam.

Bluegrass & Old Time Jam – Tussey Mountain Moonshiners

Jamming on bluegrass and old time music. For all instruments and voices, all levels beyond beginner.

Celtic Session – Holly Foy & Friends

Play tunes from the Irish and Scottish traditions. This will be mostly instrumentals, intermediate to advanced level.

Singing Jam – Cathy Petrissans & Jeff Parker

Mixed style singing jam using technology. A list of songs with chords and lyrics will be projected. Or, feel free to lead your own song. For all instruments and voices.

Start Your Own Jam 

Various locations will be available for you to start your own jam with no faculty leader.

If you’re younger than most of the people in attendance this weekend, this is a chance to meet and jam with other young folks.

Bring an original song to share with the group, or come to listen and learn.

 

How to Learn Melodies By Ear – Jay Best

Learning melodies by ear is difficult for a lot of people. We’ll look at various approaches to figuring out how to play back what you hear, and also approaches to remembering what you just played back. We’ll focus on melodies rather than chords or backup.

 

Exotic Tunes – Henry Koretzky

Add something really different to your repertoire! You’ll learn several tunes with an exotic background and sound. Sheet music and chords will be provided.

 

Morning JamHoward Blumenthal

There’s nothing like a jam first thing in the morning!

 

How to Run a Sound System – Jeff Parker

Mics, cables, monitors, speakers, and all those knobs to twiddle! Learn the basics of being a sound tech.

 

10:15 to 11:15 am

Try a Ukulele – Holly Foy & Gayla Mills

Discover why these little instruments have captured the heart of people everywhere. It’s so much fun and easy to do. Learn a few chords and songs. The session is targeted to total beginners, and instruments will be available for you to use.

 

Easy Three-Chord Songs – Steve Crawford & Bill Stetz

We’ll sing and play well-known songs that have easy chords, with no more than three chords per song. Lyrics and chords will be provided. For singers and all instruments.

 

How to JamKaren Hirshon & Linda Littleton

Learn skills that will help you join in jams. How do you figure out what to play, and what do you do if you don’t know the song?

 

Hammons Family Tunes (old time) – Jay Best

The Hammons Family of is a family of West Virginia traditionalists whose knowledge of music, storytelling, and woods lore have made them cultural guides and mentors since the 19th century. Learn about the family and learn some of their tunes. We’ll work by ear with music provided at the end of the session. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

 

Arranging Traditional Tunes – Henry Koretzky

Learn how to take a simple melody and mold it into an interesting performance piece. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

 

How to Play into a Sound System – Jeff Parker

You’ve shown up at a gig or open mic, and they’ve got a sound system for you to use. Now what? Learn the basics that a musician needs to know in order to play or sing into a sound system.

Honoring Pennsylvania Heritage Musician Rusty Frye – Terry Troxell

An important initiative of the Pennsylvania Folk Gathering is to examine the musical traditions of Pennsylvania–to gain a better understanding of what Pennsylvania music is and to preserve and perpetuate this musical heritage. Each year we identify a musician with a unique musical background and perspective, invite them to the festival so that all can learn from them, and honor them as a Pennsylvania Heritage Musician. This year, we honor Rusty Frye, a nearly-nonagenarian who has played music most of her life and who hosts several jam sessions per week.

An easy-going jam where we’ll play a variety of instrumental (i.e. non-singing) tunes–anything goes!

 

Singing Jam – Gene & Gayla Mills

This will be a relaxed, fun time of singing old favorites and perhaps some new favorites as well. For all voices and instruments.

 

Hiking – Ginny Mutti

We’ll explore the Blue Diamond grounds and the state forest that surrounds it.

Try an Autoharp – Larry Mutti & Gayla Mills

What other instrument can you cradle in your arms and strum next to your ear? Autoharp is a wonderful, versatile and not too difficult instrument, so come give it a try! Autoharps will be provided, and we’ll start with the very basic beginnings.  

 

Townes Van Zandt SongsGene Mills

Learn about Townes Van Zandt, and learn some of his songs. Lyrics and chords will be provided. For all voices and instruments.

 

Intro to Soloing – Henry Koretzky

You’re at a jam and it’s your turn to play a solo. What do you do? In this workshop, Henry will show simple techniques to help you get started with soloing. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

 

Easy Old Time Tunes – Jay Best

We’ll learn a few easy tunes from the old time repertoire, with attention to both melody players and rhythm players. Tunes will be taught by ear with music available if needed. For all instruments, advanced beginner level.

 

Chord TheoryKen Shafranko

We’ll look at the basics of how chords are built, using both major and minor chords. Then we’ll look at how to use that information on your instrument or with your voice. For all instruments and voices, all levels beyond beginner.

 

Contradance Band PracticeSteve Buckalew & Holly Foy

We’ll look over the music that the open band will play at the evening dance. Music and chords will be provided. For all instruments, intermediate/advanced level. Note: If you miss this session, it’s still ok to play for the dance. It’s also ok to attend this session but not play for the dance.

 

Jamming with PA Heritage Musician Rusty Frye – Simple Gifts

A fun jam featuring Pennsylvania Heritage Musician Rusty Frye. This will be mostly jamming, but also some chatting and hearing more of Rusty’s stories.

 

3:45 to 4:45 pm

Singing for Non-Singers – Gene & Gayla Mills

This workshop is targeted to people who don’t usually sing, including those who insist “I can’t sing.”

 

Harmony Singing – Gwen & Bill Stetz

We’ll sing common songs that have easy harmonies, teach you the harmony line, and then sing together. Lyrics and chords will be provided.

 

Introduction to CloggingCathy Petrissans

Want to impress your co-workers at the next departmental meeting? Well then – learn to clog. Clogging is a percussive dance form that began in the Appalachian Mountains. Join us as we learn elementary steps by making basic audible rhythms with our feet. While not required, clogging can be made easier with leather soled or at least somewhat slippery shoes. No previous dance experience necessary, this workshop is for total beginners looking for fun.

 

Easy Irish Tunes – Holly Foy & Friends

We’ll learn a few easy-to-play Irish tunes. We’ll work by ear with music provided at the end of the workshop.

 

Playing Swing – Steve Buckalew

For many who are used to playing folk tunes, the world of swing represents a daunting leap into the dark. Learn the basic tools necessary to begin exploring and developing your own style. Sheet music and chords will be provided. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

 

New England Tunes Henry Koretzky

We’ll learn a few jigs and reels from the New England repertoire, with attention to both melody players and rhythm players. We’ll work by ear, with music available if needed. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Anything goes at this jam–singing, instrumentals, whatever you want to suggest.

Try a CajónJeff Parker

This will be a basic intro to an easy and fun instrument. A cajón is a box-shaped percussion instrument that you can sit on and play by slapping and tapping the front, side, or rear faces with your hands. (Drum brushes work too.) A few cajónswill be provided, and we’ll take turns playing them. Bring your own if you have one.

 

Hymn Singing – Tussey Mountain Moonshiners members

We’ll sing and play a variety of hymns, with lyrics and chords provided. For all voices and instruments.

 

Rhythm Basics for All Backup Instruments – Gene Mills

Learn how to have solid rhythm and how to listen rhythmically, as well as how to help your band not speed up or slow down.

 

Ernie Carpenter Tunes (old time) – Jay Best

Learn about West Virginia fiddler Ernie Carpenter (1907-1997), and learn some of his tunes. We’ll work by ear with music provided at the end of the session.

Try a BodhranHolly Foy

Holly will show you how to play this popular Irish drum. Makeshift bodhrans (made from pizza boxes!) will be available, and we’ll also have a few real bodhrans available for you to try. Besides learning mechanics of playing, we’ll touch on which rhythm pattern to use for reels, jigs, hornpipes, etc.

 

Patsy Cline Songs – Cathy Petrissans

Although many Patsy Cline songs can be challenging, this workshop will cover some of her easier and lesser known songs, as well as some of her classics. A booklet with lyrics and chords will be provided. This workshop is suited for instrumentalists beyond beginners. If you have one, bring your capo. All singers are also welcome.

 

Easy Waltzes – Henry Koretzky

The waltz is one of the oldest and most romantic dance forms. In this class, we’ll explain the rhythm and basic sound of waltzes and then we’ll play a few easy waltzes. We’ll work by ear with music available if needed. There will be tips for both melody and backup players.

Pennsylvania Tunes from the 1940s – Simple Gifts

Working from sheet music, we’ll look at a variety of tunes collected in southwestern and south-central Pennsylvania during the 1940s and published by Samuel Bayard in his important collection, Dance the Fiddle, March to the Fife. There will be tips for both melody and backup players.

  

Intro to Improvise – Steve Buckalew

Improvisation makes music SO MUCH FUN! Steve will share tips about how to improvise and then we’ll give it a try. For all instruments, all levels beyond beginner.

Try a Melodica – Cathy Petrissans

Learn to play the melodica like the “Melodica Men” on YouTube or as heard in “The Office” theme song. In this workshop, you will get to try this affordable and increasingly popular instrument. This is a “from scratch” workshop geared to those with no previous keyboard experience. Since you put your mouth on the instrument, you’ll need to buy your own. We’ll have some available for $20.

 

Murder BalladsTussey Mountain Moonshiner members

With egregious murder sung of in great detail, plenty of if often based on truth, the murder ballad is a spectacularly disturbing folk music phenomenon!  Join us in learning a few captivating murder ballads, both old and new, and some history behind them. Lyrics and chords will be provided.

 

Super Cool Easy Tunes – Steve Buckalew & Holly Foy

Tunes don’t have to be challenging to be awesome! In this class, we will learn some wonderful tunes from several different traditions, all of which are easy to play. Sheet music will be provided, and we’ll work at an advanced beginner level. For all instruments, with tips for both melody and backup players.

 

Old Time Jam – Jay Best

A relaxed and fun time jamming on old time tunes!

Open Mic with FeedbackKaren Hirshon & Jeff Parker

This is an open mic where you can go to perform for the group or to listen, with the added benefit of having Karen and Jeff give feedback on each performance and help you use the sound system to your best advantage.
